Travel Medicine is an emerging branch of medicine that specialises in disease and conditions that are acquired during travel. There is an emphasis on disease prevention through vaccination, the use of malaria prevention medication and behavioural advice. In addition, some Travel Medicine physicians perform check-ups of patients following travel, either for the purpose of reassurance or in order to cure established infections.

Travel Medicine embraces aspects of General Practice, Tropical Medicine, Occupational Medicine and Public Health.

While Travel Medicine has not yet been formally recognised as a distinct specialty by either the Irish Medical Council or by the General Medical Council (UK), both bodies have been asked to confer such recognition following a formal submission by the Faculty of Travel Medicine, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow): Protecting the health of travellers from the UK and Ireland (October 2014)
